Erectile Dysfunction Treatment in India

Erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence is sexual dysfunction characterized by the inability to develop or maintain an erection of the penis during sexual activity.[1] A penile erection is the hydraulic effect of blood entering and being retained in sponge-like bodies within the penis. The process is often initiated as a result of sexual arousal, when signals are transmitted from the brain to nerves in the penis. The most important organic causes are cardiovascular disease and diabetes, neurological problems (for example, trauma from prostatectomy surgery), hormonal insufficiencies (hypogonadism) and drug side effects.

How does erection occur?

Erection begins with sexual stimulation. Sexual stimulation can be tactile (for example, by touching the penis) or mental (for example, by having sexual fantasies). Sexual stimulation or sexual arousal generates electrical impulses along the nerves going to the penis and causes the nerves to release nitric oxide, which in turn increases the production of cyclic GMP (cGMP) in the smooth muscle cells of the corpora cavernosa. The cGMP causes the smooth muscles of the corpora cavernosa to relax and allow rapid blood flow into the penis. The incoming blood fills the corpora cavernosa, making the penis expand.

Ayurveda defines Erectile dysfunction or ED as follows.

Sankalpapravano nityam priyaam vashyaamapi sthreeyam.
Na yaathi lingashaithilyaath kadaachidyaathi vaa yadi Shwaasaarthaha swinnagaatrshcha moghasankalpacheshtitaha

How Is Erectile Dysfunction Treated?

In some cases, simple lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, drinking less alcohol, or quitting smoking, may improve erectile dysfunction.

If the erectile dysfunction is caused by a certain medication, your doctor may suggest reducing the dose or trying an alternative drug. Certain blood pressure medications, allergy drugs, antidepressants, sedatives, appetite suppressants, and an ulcer drug called cimetidine may make it hard for a man to get a firm erection.

Most men with erectile dysfunction, however, will need further treatment. Treatment options for erectile dysfunction include:

  • Psychotherapy (counseling)
  • Medications (drug therapy)
  • Vacuum devices (pumps)
  • Surgery

Erectile Dysfunction Ayurvedic Treatment India

Ayurveda is an ancient medical science which teaches us how to be healthy and to lead a long and fruitful life. Hundreds of diseases are very well explained along with causes, symptoms and remedies on lines of dosha theory in Ayurveda. Diet and lifestyle modifications mentioned in Ayurveda for each disease play an important role in bringing the diseases and conditions under control . Ayurveda does not advise symptomatic treatment. It advises the vaidyas (qualified ayurvedic doctors) to treat the root cause.

L-arginine is an amino acid that increases nitric oxide levels in the body. Nitric oxide is a molecule that signals smooth muscle surrounding blood vessels (including those in the penis) to relax, which dilates blood vessels and increases blood flow – a necessity for maintaining erections.

Found naturally in protein foods such as meat, chicken, fish, walnuts and peas, L-arginine is also a fairly popular supplement for sports concerns and bodybuilding as it is used for protein synthesis in the body.
